Wendee,
I apologize, that was not made clear in your original message.
What I can gather from your messages is that you are unhappy with the implementation of Common Core and that the voices of those who oppose Common Core are not being heard. I want to assure you that Representative Magendanz has met with dozens of anti-Common Core groups in hopes that they can find common ground and meets with classrooms and teachers regularly. Also, the Senate attempted to pass legislation that would allow Washington State to opt out of Common Core; that bill did not even get a hearing.
Rep. Magendanz does not support the feds dictating how to educate our kids and understands that a federal Board of Education would be unconstitutional. However, I want you to understand that Washington State is a “local control” state, and that means that our local school districts determine the curriculum for its students. So if you have a problem with the way that information is being taught in your local school district, you as a parents can bring those concerns to your school board and change it. No legislative action is needed. That is what the representative did before he was elected to the house of Representatives; he sat on the Issaquah School Board. He knows firsthand that the anti-Common Core propaganda is misguided.
As for your concerns regarding student data, the legislature is far from being able to accurately collect data about student performance. The teachers unions, parents, and OSPI are adamantly opposed to taking the time to measure student success in a meaningful way.
If you have further questions, please let me know.
